Overview for Year 7
Year 7 is students' first NAPLAN sitting in secondary school. The tests assume a higher level of reading endurance, abstract thinking and mathematical reasoning. Students should expect to engage with more complex texts and multi-step problem-solving tasks.
Test Structure and Timing
- Reading: 65 minutes — multiple texts including persuasive, informative and literary
- Writing: 42 minutes (online) — narrative or persuasive prompt, assessed on higher-order criteria
- Conventions of Language: 45 minutes — advanced spelling, complex grammar, clause structure
- Numeracy: 65 minutes — non-calculator and calculator sections
Advanced Skills Assessed
Reading
Students must analyse text structure, identify bias, compare themes across multiple texts, and evaluate author intent. Questions require more synthesis and justification.
Writing
Markers look for sophisticated vocabulary, varied sentence structures, coherent paragraphing, and a clear controlling idea. Persuasive writing requires well-developed arguments with evidence.
Numeracy
Topics include ratios and proportions, algebraic expressions, volume and surface area, probability, and coordinate geometry. The calculator-allowed section enables more complex calculations.
Preparation Tips for Year 7
- Practise timed conditions to build test stamina
- Review fractions, decimals and percentages thoroughly
- Read newspaper opinion pieces and discuss the author's viewpoint
- Work on planning and proofreading written responses
- Use the NAPLAN online practice tests available on the ACARA website
